Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) Calculator ๐Ÿบ

Estimate your blood alcohol concentration and how long it may take to become sober.
Warning: This is only a theoretical estimate and does not replace legal or medical testing. Never drink and drive.

1. Your Details
This affects the distribution factor in Widmarkโ€™s formula and is not related to gender identity.
You can enter your weight in pounds (lb) or kilograms (kg). The calculator converts everything internally to kilograms for the BAC formula.
2. What did you drink?
Add every drink you consumed. The calculator sums the alcohol from all lines (e.g. Beer + Whisky).

Understanding Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC)

Widmarkโ€™s formula is one of the most widely used methods to estimate BAC. It takes into account:
  • Body weight: People with higher body mass have more body water to dilute alcohol.
  • Biological sex: On average, males have a higher proportion of body water than females, which affects alcohol distribution.
  • Metabolism: The body eliminates alcohol at an average rate of about 0.015% BAC per hour, although this can vary.
This calculator uses standard reference values and should not be interpreted as a precise medical or legal measurement.

In addition to body weight and biological sex, several other factors can change your BAC:
  • Food in the stomach: Eating slows down alcohol absorption.
  • Speed of drinking: Drinking quickly leads to a higher BAC peak.
  • Alcohol content of drinks: Different beverages have very different concentrations (Beer ~5%, Wine ~12%, Spirits ~40%).
  • Medications and health conditions: Liver disease, medications, and fatigue can significantly alter metabolism.

Legal BAC limits vary by country and even by region (commonly 0.05% or 0.08% for drivers). Some jurisdictions adopt a near-zero tolerance policy, especially for professional or young drivers.

Regardless of the legal threshold where you live, the safest recommendation is always the same: if you drink, do not drive or operate machinery.

Reference table of common effects

BAC (%) Common effects
0.02 โ€“ 0.03% Mild relaxation, slight change in mood.
0.05 โ€“ 0.06% Reduced inhibition, impaired judgment, feeling of warmth.
0.08 โ€“ 0.09% Reduced motor coordination, slower reaction time. (Illegal to drive in many countries).
0.10 โ€“ 0.15% Slurred speech, impaired balance, possible nausea.
> 0.20% Confusion, memory blackouts, risk of coma and respiratory depression.
